The Bass model decomposes adoption into innovation effect p and imitation effect q, applied to remaining market potential. It provides a trajectory conditional on estimated parameters and market definition. It does not predict a real launch on its own, especially when price, distribution, competition or capacity change.
Decision and method.
Use the curve as a reference scenario, compare out-of-sample errors and test alternatives before inventory, capacity or budget decisions. Define adoption unit, product, area, period and event: trial, purchase and active user are not interchangeable. Estimate p, q and m from a sufficient cumulative series; publish estimation method and test sensitivity to starting point and market potential. Project period by period, calculate new adopters, update cumulative adoption and preserve parameters, dates and versions producing each scenario. Validate on unused periods, compare alternative models and re-estimate when price, channels or competition change. Block calculation if p or q is outside [0, 1], m is zero, or cumulative adoption exceeds m.
Worked example.
Illustrative parameters: p = 0.03; q = 0.38; potential m = 100,000; cumulative adopters A = 15,000. New adopters = [0.03 + 0.38 × (15,000 / 100,000)] × (100,000 − 15,000) = 7,395. These 7,395 adopters are a projection of the stated scenario, not a sales target or guaranteed forecast.
Checks and limits.
Publish adoption definition, period, potential market and estimation method; compare holdout error and sensitivity to m before capacity decisions; revise when price, channel, offer or competition breaks series continuity. The model aggregates people and does not directly represent segment heterogeneity; p and q are not universal constants transferable between launches; an in-sample fit does not guarantee good forecast; stock, distribution and communication constraints are outside the base model.
