A creative is not effective because it earns a high click-through rate or is liked. It must capture enough attention, communicate the right message, be attributed to the brand, change a relevant belief and produce behavioural effect in a real delivery context. Each link can fail independently.

Decision and method.

Keep, rework or stop a creative by locating the failing mechanism rather than aggregating incompatible metrics. State the intended idea, belief, audience and action before the campaign. Test visibility or attention, unaided understanding, brand attribution, credibility and persuasion against separate thresholds. Randomise delivery across comparable populations and inventory and include an unexposed group when possible. Rework the opening when attention fails, simplify when understanding fails, reinforce brand codes when attribution fails and change the proof when credibility blocks.

Worked example.

Across 1,000,000 comparable impressions, A achieves 35% attention, 52% understanding and 4% action among people who understood; B achieves 28%, 75% and 6%. A produces 1,000,000 × 35% × 52% × 4% = 7,280 qualified actions. B produces 1,000,000 × 28% × 75% × 6% = 12,600, or +73%, despite lower CTR. Allocate more delivery to B; rework A’s understanding and persuasion rather than preserve clicks as the primary metric.

Checks and limits.

Write role and mechanism before testing; balance delivery and audience; assign each link its own metric and threshold; separate behavioural effect from observed rate when a comparator exists. Declarative pretests imperfectly reproduce real attention and context; short-term absence of effect does not always refute long-term memory; creative, frequency and format interactions often require several test cells.
